Most people stop using the tub years before they replace it. A tub to shower conversion turns that dead space into a walk-in shower you actually use, and in most bathrooms it makes the whole room feel bigger.
What the work actually involves
This is not a liner dropped over the old tub. We take the tub out, strip back to the studs where needed, and rebuild the base properly: a shower pan with real pre-slope to the drain, cement board or Schluter Kerdi-Board on the walls, and full waterproofing before any tile is set.
Plumbing usually needs to move. The tub spout goes, the valve is reset at shower height, and the drain is repositioned for the new pan. That is rough plumbing work, not a swap, which is why a proper conversion takes a crew rather than an afternoon.
Why the waterproofing step decides everything
A converted shower sees far more water against the walls than a tub ever did. In Florida humidity, a base that was not flood tested is where mold starts, hidden behind new tile. We waterproof the full enclosure, seal every corner, seam and fastener, and flood test the pan before tiling.
What you can choose
- Low or curbless threshold for easier access
- A built-in bench and recessed niches sized to your bottles
- Porcelain, marble or mosaic, with mitered edges instead of bullnose trim
- Frameless glass, a fixed panel, or an open walk-in with no door
How long the bathroom is out of use
A conversion is not a one day job, whatever anyone advertises. The pan has to be built, waterproofed and flood tested, and the waterproofing needs time to cure before tile. Rushing any of those is how a shower fails early. We give you a realistic timeline in writing once we have measured, so you can plan around it rather than find out as it goes.
Can you keep the same footprint
Usually yes, and it keeps the cost down. A tub alcove is often close to the right size for a walk-in shower, so the drain moves a short distance and the walls stay where they are. If you want the shower wider than the old tub, that becomes a layout change, and we will tell you what it involves before you decide.
How we quote it
We come out, measure, look at what is behind the wall where we can, and give you a written scope and fixed price before anything is ordered. See the seven stages we work through, or ask us in the chat.
